  1. I have not had a perm since March 2010. I have never been one with the patience to transition very long so in July 2010, I cut the perm off and my hair was very short. I had to deal with the fact that my husband didn't exactly care for my hair that short but knew eventually it would grow. I love that I can wear my natural hair in so many ways and not be restricted to just straight or rolled hair styles. Great page by the way!

  2. One thing I had to overcome during my natural hair journey was the negative feedback I was getting for wanting to go natural. One thing I love most about my natural hair is the fact I cam do so many styles with it.

  3. The one things I have had to overcome during my natural hair journey is myself. I thought going natural would make me look "ugly". Turns out the more research and videos that I looked into the more I became confident in natural. My natural. I love it more each day. The one thing I love about my natural hair is the fact that it is versatile. Much love.------Stacy Donnelly

  4. I cut my perm out in 2002. The hardest thing was getting used to my now VERY short hair (I don't think I have the head shape or facial structure to rock a short fro.)
The most amazing thing for me is the fact that I never knew my natural hair before!! Not long after I was allowed to do my own hair my mom slapped a curl in it--yes, I had the dreaded curl--and I kept that up for 7 years and then went straight to a perm...my hair had been chemically treated from age 12-32...20 YEARS!!!
I LOVE my natural hair. It's much more manageable than I ever thought possible and so very versatile!! Over these 9 years, it has gotten longer than it's ever been before.
    I WILL NEVER GO BACK!!!!

  6. One thing I overcame was feeling like I had to impress people with how I look and feeling like if my hair is not a certain length its not nice. One thing I love is my hair is sooooo thick and corkscrewy and I now love it and I'm greatful I was inspired to go natural.

  7. One thing I've had to overcome was my being impatient and not wanting to go back to a TWA as my natural hair grew out with all its accompanying tangles and knots! One thing I love is how versatile my natural hair is. I can wear it braided, twisted, straight, in a fro, you name it, I can rock it!

  8. One thing I have to overcome is just the overwhelming information out there and realizing that what works for one, does not work for all......regardless of how much that persons hair seems "exactly like mine"! That is also the main thing i LOVE about my hair! It is like NO OTHER!

  9. The one thing that I have overcome during my natural hair journey is that I have stop worrying about what others may say or think about me!, and the one thing I love about being natural is that it allows me to be free! I can walk in the rain and work up a sweat while holding my head up knowing my hair does not dictate who I'am. Pam Nalls

  10. I had to overcome my fear of how people would perceive my natural hair. I have had cousins call natural hair disgusting and in high school being natural was not the thing to do unless you had "good hair", but the blogs and forums really helped me embrace my natural hair regardless of what people think.

  11. One thing that I had to overcome was and still is my lack of creativity with styling. I think in almost 5 years I have only worn MAYBE 10 different styles! My favorite thing about my hair is that it is the hair that I wanted my entire life without knowing that I had it! The more my hair reveals itself to me, the more satisfied I am with it!

  12. One thing I had to overcome is.my hair isn't like everyone elses.... When I started my journey I was always comparing my hair to my best friends hair. Both of have soft hair but my curls are more defined than hers and also hers kinkier than mines... I had to realize we all have different hair types and genetics..... I would worry about if I still had perm when I just had curly hair. I also realized and overcame that I can't use any and everything just because my friend and other people say its great cause what works for others may not works for me..... I love my hair and so does my friends and family and that's all the support I truly need....

  13. Hi Ms Lisa,

I havent had a perm for over 2 years now but I am still wearing my braids, havent come out with my natural look yet. One thing Ive had to overcome is challenge of "dealing" with my own God-given hair! Its been hard but your blog has really helped me find some good products. What I love about my natural hair is how fast its growing, it never really grew with the perm, but now I can see so much growth each time I redo my braids. Thanks so much for starting this blog, its a God send and congratulations on making it on NaturallyCurly.com!!

  14. One thing I had to overcome during my natural hair journey was finding the right products for my particular hair type and achieving certain styles. There is so much information out there, and it is hard to sift through it all! I tried so many products and spent a huge amount of money in beginning in a pursuit for healthy moisturized hair. What I love about my natural hair is that it is healthy! Once you find what works, it works! (when I had a perm, I constantly had to change my regimen)I also enjoy the fact that I can play in my hair and I don't have to worry about broken hair strands all over my bathroom floor or my clothes.

  15. one thing i had to overcome was finding products that work for me and stop trying to get products that worked for everybody else cause everybody hair is different... and also looking at everybody else hair saying i wish my hair looked like there so i learned to love my curls and mines is beautiful just like there!

  16. I had to overcome the fear of being natural! Like most of us, I have had a perm since I was about 6 and my hair has always been thick and long. I grew tired of thin, shedding hair. I contemplated going natural for 4 years for fear of thinking I had to cut ALL of my hair off!! Once I did my research and found that I can transition, I thought it would be easy, NOT!! I lost A TON of hair after taking out some 2 strand twist extensions. It was at THAT moment where the urge to go back to a perm was overwhelming. I had to get over it and tell myself it was just hair and as before, it would grow back! It's taking a while but I am happy to say that it is! :) And what I love most about my natural hair is the versatility AND the fact that I can go on a vacation and go swimming!!!! LOL

  18. I had to overcome so much going natural. The rejection to it from an important family member, the constant stares, the feeling (for the first time in my life) of not having hair past my shoulders and not knowing exactly what to do with my hair (in the beginning.) I've always wanted to be natural but knew that it would not be accepted by that certain family member (whose opinion meant sooooo much to me.) Once I was on my own, I did it and I could not have be happier. What I love the most about my natural hair is that it is all mine and untouched (no chemicals, no heat, just whatever grows from my scalp.) I've never felt so confident and beautiful. When my hair was long and relaxed I was my hair. And now I can truly say that I am not my hair, my hair is me and now I am truly a naturally beautiful and soulful sista (from head to toe). The freedom of being natural has been so amazing for me. In November it will be 1 full year since the big chop!

  19. When i say i loooooove my natural hair it is an understatement! The versatility is crazy, i recently got my 9 month baby (thats what i call my hair) blown out and dyed blonde <-LOVES IT! i would say the only thing i had to overcome was finding the right products for my hair, being that there are all kinds of natural hair products out. I basically did not want to become a product junkie because im a diva on a budget lol

  20. One thing I've had to overcome is the dryness! I never had to to do oil treatments and DCs with my permed hair but I've learned to like my pampering sessions for my hair so I don't mind doing it now. One thing that I love about my natural hair is how much I've learned about beauty products and the ingredients in them. Being natural has made me a lot more aware of advertising scam and had made me more aware of what I'm putting in my hair and on my skin.

  21. The biggest trial that I've had to overcome, for me, was LETTING GO of the ponytail! The easiest option for me was to sling my hair back into a ponytail, whether wet or dry, and not have to look in the mirror for the rest of the day and "worry" about my hair. But that's because I had no confidence in my hair. I had to patiently learn, through trial-and-error, how to style my hair...and how to be comfortable wearing it down!

The thing I love the most about my naturally curly hair...is styling! I twist my hair around my finger when it's wet, scrunch, and go!! And...I know all the girls who heat-style their hair are SO jealous...when my hair gets messed up by the wind, or is looking a little frumpy, I turn to my BIGGEST "styling" tool....water!!! Water will put the curl right back into my hair, and I LOVE it!

  22. Have to overcome people invading "personal space" to try and touch the hair.

I love all the things you can do with natural hair.

  23. The one thing I have had to overcome is realizing and learning that I did not know much about my hair or hair in general.

What I love most about my natural hair is that I am putting all great things into it and that it loves me for it :-)

Btw, I liked your page on Facebook but my name there is Tee Harris.

  24. I had to overcome the pattern of my hair texture. I had to realize that my hair texture will not be that 'good' type of curl or that loose curl that we all are looking for. Overcoming the fact that most products I use is not going to define my 4b/4c type hair and give me that 3a/3b curl pattern. I had/have to accept the type of hair that I have and understand that with different styles and techniques, my hair can look just as good.

I really love that I can get compliments no matter how nappy my hair is and that my hair is full and thick. I love that my hair is growing and continues to grow longer than it has even grown before. I use to have a set length on when my hair would stop growing but now it is all over the place.

  25. Well, I've had to overcome some family members' total shock that I was going natural, friends saying they'll believe it when they see it, some even going so far as to tell me that they "didn't like that style".
I'm over it and so happy, I LOVE MY HAIR...so happy that my daughter is growing up seeing that her mom is no longer worried about the bone straight hair and is totally happy with wearing her hair like her's...the way it grows, NATURALLY!

Thanks for the opportunity! email: mateasa@yahoo.com

  26. Currently I am transitioning and have been for a yeah and a half. The more my natural hair grows, the more I see it's texture and how curly it is and that's what I love. I've had to overcome my own familys prejudices against natural hair but everyday it gets better.

  27. I have a mixed daughter and I the thing that I have had to overcome is learning to care for her natural hair. It is still all new to me. I love all the styles and cool things you can do with my daughters naturally curly hair.
